Refugee Week 2026: GP Dr Shazia Munir inspires us with a talk about the value of hope in the care of asylum seekers and refugees

From a webinar hosted by HVHF 20th May 2026 entitled Hope in Adversity.

We were honoured to host two inspirational speakers, Dr Libby Sallnow, palliative care consultant, and Dr Shazia Munir, GP, specialised in care of asylum seekers and refugees.

Convergence Oxford conference True companionship: Solitude and Belonging. March 29-30 2025

Paquita de Zulueta (chair, HVHF) offered reflections to a mixed audience (over 100) on sharing decisions in the the context of suffering and dying at the end of life in conversation with Caesar Atuire, philosopher and global health ethicist, and Gillian Hayes, palliative care nurse, chaired by Dr Liliana Bertini of the Bios Centre.

This was very well received and generated a great deal of discussion.

A recording of the session is here.

“REFLETHICS” – Facilitated interdisciplinary ethics conversations for all those working in health and social care

Since November 2024 HVHF has launched a new initiative to offer health and social care professionals a confidential, respectful space to explore and reflect on the ethical challenges and dilemmas (moral events) they encounter in their work. Facilitation is provided by two experienced facilitators, one of whom has a background in clinical ethics.

There is evidence that interdisciplinary conversations of this kind can offer some protection from moral distress, promote confidence in coping with such events, help gain a greater sense of agency, as well as enhance a positive work environment.

These events are on-line and FREE. If there is sufficient demand and in order to increase availability, we shall extend to two sessions monthly (3rd Friday lunchtime as well).

You can find more details and sign up via Eventbrite here.

Reflethics Poster: REFLETHICS An opportunity to join facilitated on-line case-based conversations about the ethical and values-based issues you encounter in the workplace. • Experienced facilitators with clinical ethics and educational backgrounds. • Confidential safe space. • Multidisciplinary - anyone can join. • Monthly lunchtime conversations 3rd Wednesday 1-2pm • Starting November 20th Limited to 10 participants/session. Register and find out more here.
